Chhoti Diwali is also called as Narak Chaturdashi. The Chhoti Diwali is celebrated one day before Diwali.

Story of Chhoti Diwali:

There are many stories to tell the importance of Narak Chaturdashi, one of which is associated with Shri Krishna. According to the Srimad Bhagvata Mahapurana, the demon named Narakasura had troubled the gods and with his power. Asura kept 16 thousand women captive along with saints.

Seeing his growing tyranny, the gods and sages took refuge of Lord Krishna and asked him to reduce the burden of sin from the earth by ending this Narakasura. Lord Krishna assured him but Narakasura was cursed to die at the hands of a woman, so Lord Krishna made his wife Satyabhama a charioteer and killed Narakasura with his help. The day Narakasura came to an end, it was the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month.

After the slaughter of Narakasura, Shri Krishna got the girls free from bondage. After liberation, the girls pleaded with Lord Krishna that the society would never accept them, so you should find a solution for this.
Get our respect back. In order to give respect to these girls in society, Lord Krishna married 16 thousand girls with the help of Satyabhama. The tradition of door-to-door lamp donation started on the occasion of the liberation of 16 thousand girls and the slaughter of Narakasura.
